The Chedi

The place :
Located in the Arabian Peninsula, the Sultanate of Oman had preserved its land from tourism for a long time. Long known as the hermit of the Middle East, Oman is slowly emerging from its shell, revealing a land of friendly people, dramatic landscapes. Once you get the privilege to discover this country, it grows on you because of its diversity and cultural richness.

Muscat, the capital, stretches along the Indian Ocean on the north coast and differs from the other cities of the Gulf because of its intriguing mix of the old and the new. The weather there is hot but less arid than inland Oman. The Chedi Muscat is a recent hotel on a private beach in a large tropical garden. A destination for luxurious escapism and spa holidays.

Comprising 3 districts, Muscat can be divided into Muscat, Mutrah and Ruwi. Muscat or the old port area, is steeped in history and culture, and bordered by gated walls, which form an enclosure around the port, His Majesty the Sultan′s Palace and the harbour. Mutrah, the main trading and residential area, has made its name as a haven for souvenir shoppers. Ruwi, the capital′s thriving commercial district, boosts amenities that can be found in any modern-day metropolis.

Muscat has something to offer to every traveller. For travellers who wish to learn more about 16th century Portuguese occupation of Muscat, there are the magnificent Jalali, Miran and Mutrah Forts. For souvenir hunting travellers, Muscat offers shopping opportunities aplenty in malls and the Old Mutrah Souq (market). And for travellers who yearn for some sea, sand and sun, there is the popular Marina Bandar Al Rowdha, which offers water-sports, dolphin watching and countless marine-related activities.

People keen on sports will love to practice scuba diving, surfing on the dunes or rock climbing. The less adventurous ones would choose cruises in the Arabian Gulf or safaris. Whiba′s erg is made of sand hills and easily accessible where you can go for hiking and bivouacs. In the south, Rub'al-Khali′s desert remains the largest unexplored desert in the world.

Oman has one of the world's most rigourously green governments. National Protected Areas scattered around the country where you can observe rare Arabian oryx, giant sea turtles, the Arabian tahr, Arabian wolf and leopard, striped hyena and the sooty falcon.

In the south, the Dhofar region is the green oasis of the country. You should not miss: the Al Hafah market, the road to the Rub'al-Khali desert, the ruins of Sumhuram and the village of Mughsail famous for its geysers springing out from natural cavities when the sea rushes into it.

The Musindam Peninsula is a nice place for cruises on dhows to admire the coast from the sea. Bathing, snorkelling and visiting small fishermen villages are the points of interest of this region.
