La Valette is a truly a masterpiece of Baroque Art... Its narrow streets and alleyways are ideal for delightful strolls. Should you be passionate about history, journey back in time to the Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem. Built in 1565 and named after the Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Valette, the city developed and acquired important work of arts thanks to the patronage of the Order and their close relationship with famous painters such as Caravaggio and Mattia Preti and architects like Cachia. Several monuments still recall the roles played by those aesthetes in the history of Malta as can be seen from the magnificence and splendour of the Grand Masters Palace. Built on 2 levels, this splendid building occupies a whole district.

The Castille Hotel and the Italy Hotel also form part of the splendid relics of those Knights of Malta and artists' work of arts.

Take time to visit the capital city in all its splendour... The growth and development of La Valette was indeed impelled by the conflict opposing the Knights of Malta to the Ottoman Turks under Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. In this view, the knights increased the fortifications, particularly in the inner-harbour area, where Valetta was built but also throughout the island making it an impressive fortress. If you are fond of historical events, you might head for those imposing ramparts which can still be seen today, a few minutes drive only from the hotel.

As you walk in the footsteps of the Noble Knights of Malta, you will discover the magnificent Saint John Cathedral considered as one of the first architectural work of art of the Baroque Art. This historical heritage is home to 115 tombs of the Knights of Malta that form a splendid tangle on part of its floor.

At last but not least, continue your journey up to the Manoel Theatre of La Valette. Small indeed, this theatre with a lavish, oval-shaped auditorium inspired by the Palermo Theatre is splendid and displays a sumptuous decoration.

The Prehistoric sites

The altars intended for animal sacrifice, Oracle rooms, statues, statuettes, pottery figurines and phallic symbols among other objects representing the earliest evidence of religious manifestations of the occidental men wait to be discovered... Some of the megalithic edifices also primitive temples are made up of a number of semicircular apses encircling the corridors. Other places of interest a few kilometres only from La Valette: the Tarsien and Hagar Qim temples and Ghar Dalam amongst others.
